Dundee-born author returns to roots to create a novel based on historical ancestors.

For many people, writing a book is on their bucket list and for Dundee-born Ian Campbell, this is exactly what he has accomplished during the pandemic.

Born in the post-war years of Dundee, Ian Campbell grew up in the industrial city and witnessed first hand the generational effects of poverty and war.

A time-served Boilermaker and subsequently trained soldier, Ian Campbell travelled the world with his family as a professional to South Africa, the Middle East, Malaysia and Australia and eventually returned to the UK to run a large heavy engineering company in the North East of Scotland and then management consultant, before retiring.

In the winter of 2020, on a cold day in Fife, Scotland, the global pandemic brought the world to a stand-still.

Mr Campbell’s passion for history and storytelling sparked, and, together with wife Liz, The Crescent was penned.

The author used his creativity to piece together captivating family stories, interwoven with real evidence through DC Thomson’s Find My Past and also The Courier paper cuttings from the time.

By mid January, the novel was finished and picked up by a publisher. Ian Campbell said, “I felt great satisfaction at recording the truth based on documentary evidence from the past. At the end I realised that it’s not the book you read that changes your life, it’s the book that you write”.

The Crescent is available to buy on Amazon, and at bookstores such as Toppings & co. in St. Andrews, The Bookstore in Broughty Ferry, The Black Watch Museum in Perth, and soon to be sold in Waterstones in Dundee.
